TREE HOUSE Inner West Sydney, NSW An inner-city addition carefully positioned within a mature tree canopy. Set within a leafy street in Sydney’s Inner West, Tree House reimagines a period cottage through a carefully crafted upper-level addition shaped by its relationship with surrounding street trees. Detailed mapping of the existing canopy informed a restrained design that required minimal pruning, allowing the new volume to sit lightly within the branches while drawing filtered natural light into the interiors. The addition emerges from the existing roofline, with corrugated metal folding into the new form while a custom brick blend ties the extension to the original masonry. Living spaces are positioned to engage with the surrounding greenery, creating a quiet dialogue between architecture and landscape. A robust palette of brick, metal, and timber is refined through precise detailing, establishing a calm balance between heritage character and contemporary intervention while preserving valuable urban tree cover.

Testimonial

Place Design approached our project with incredible care and creativity. Working within the constraints of the existing cottage and surrounding trees was no small task, but they turned it into a defining feature of the house. The result feels beautifully connected to the garden and perfectly suited to the character of the street
